Sourcing belts from China: what to know

That is a high share for an accessories category. The largest clusters are Dongguan with 16 suppliers, Guangzhou with 13 and Hangzhou with 12. Belts range from fashion leather to webbing and tactical duty belts, and the right supplier depends heavily on which of those you are making.
Where belts are made and who makes them
In our experience, Guangzhou is strongest in leather and PU belts, including the Huadu leather goods district. Dongguan supplies much of the metal hardware and die cast buckles used across the industry. Zhejiang, around Hangzhou, produces fashion belts alongside bags and apparel. The listing also includes uniform and workwear makers in Wuhan and Fuzhou, which typically supply belts as part of wider uniform programs. Of the 91 suppliers, 62 are manufacturer and trader, 27 are manufacturers and 2 are traders. Many belt factories make straps in house and buy buckles from hardware specialists, so identify who controls each component.
Materials, construction and cost drivers
Straps are typically full grain or top grain leather, split or bonded leather, PU, or nylon and polyester webbing. Buckles are zinc alloy, brass, stainless steel or molded plastic. Leather construction involves cutting, skiving, edge painting or burnishing, stitching, and sometimes laminating two layers together. Cost is driven by leather grade, strap width and thickness, and buckle material and plating. A custom logo buckle adds cost because it typically requires a die cast mold. Webbing belts are cheaper to make, but cost rises with custom weaves, heavy load ratings and quick release hardware. Describe bonded and split leather accurately in your listings, since rules in markets such as the US restrict how leather content can be claimed.
MOQs, sampling and lead times
Of the 72 suppliers that publish an MOQ, 46 accept 50 units or fewer. Another 9 sit between 51 and 200, 11 between 201 and 500, 4 between 501 and 1,000, and 2 above 1,000. That spread reflects the setup costs of custom leather colors and branded buckles, while low minimums usually mean stock leather and catalog buckles. Sampling is offered by 67 suppliers and custom design by 76. A strap sample typically takes one to two weeks, and a custom buckle mold adds two to three weeks. Production typically runs 25 to 45 days after approval, with capacity tighter ahead of Western holiday shipping windows.
Certifications and product compliance
amfori BSCI is the most common certification at 35 suppliers, followed by ISO 9001 at 32, Sedex SMETA at 19, GRS at 14 and ISO 14001 at 13. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is held by 6 suppliers and GOTS by 4, and both are relevant mainly for textile and webbing belts. Leather Working Group certification does not appear among the most common certifications here, so ask about tannery sourcing directly. For product safety, buyers selling in the EU typically test three things under REACH: leather for chromium VI and azo dyes, buckles for nickel release, and PU for phthalates. US buyers typically screen against California Proposition 65.
Vetting, negotiation and logistics
The high share of evidenced suppliers makes shortlisting easier. Still, ask for video of the cutting and stitching lines and confirm where the buckles are made. Negotiate buckle tooling as a one time cost that you own, with the mold reserved for your exclusive use. Write leather grade, thickness in millimeters and buckle material into the purchase order. Order a full size run and check hole spacing and length tolerance against your size chart. For customs, leather belts are typically classified under HS 4203.30, while textile and plastic belts fall under other headings, so confirm classification by strap material. US buyers should check the current additional duties on Chinese origin goods before costing.
