Sourcing knit vests from Turkey: what to know
Reviewed guide · updated 16 Sept 2026SupplySpark lists 77 knit vest manufacturers in Turkey, 53 percent supported by independent evidence from registries, customs data or verified reviews, with 58 in Istanbul. Sleeveless knitwear is a small item that exposes finishing quality, so choosing the right knitter matters more than it might seem. This guide covers the Istanbul knitwear cluster, gauges and yarns, minimums and lead times, certifications and vetting practice.
The Istanbul knitwear cluster
Istanbul holds 58 of the 77 listings, and the mix is 57 manufacturers, 12 manufacturer and trader hybrids, 3 brands and 3 manufacturer-brands. Flat knitwear, known locally as triko, is a specialist industry in the city, and representative suppliers such as Gönül Örme and Bello Tekstil list knit vests explicitly alongside pullovers and cardigans, while Filteks Moda positions itself as a design and production partner for European knitwear brands. Other listings on the page are general apparel houses, so confirm that a supplier owns flat-knitting machines rather than buying panels from a knitter and sewing them. In our experience the difference shows first in armhole and neckline finishing.
Gauges, yarns and construction
Knit vests are typically produced in 5, 7 or 12 gauge on flat-bed machines, with 12 gauge and finer described as fine-gauge. Fully fashioned panels linked at the seams give a cleaner armhole and neck trim than cut-and-sew panels and cost more in labor. Yarns range from merino and lambswool to cotton, cotton and acrylic blends and recycled blends, and Gönül Örme holds Responsible Wool Standard for wool programs. Specify the yarn count, the stitch structure for the body and the rib for trims, whether the V-neck is linked or bound, and the target finished weight. Ask whether the factory does its own linking and washing, since those two steps typically decide the hand feel.
MOQ and lead times
Nineteen of the 77 suppliers publish a minimum: 5 accept 50 units or fewer, 7 sit between 51 and 200, 5 between 201 and 500, 1 between 501 and 1,000 and 1 above 1,000. Gönül Örme publishes 300 and Filteks 1,000, which is closer to what dedicated knitters expect. In practice the yarn dye lot is the real constraint on a custom color, and spinners typically require 100 to 300 kilograms per shade, so small runs work best on stock yarn colors. In our experience sampling takes three to four weeks and bulk eight to ten weeks after approval, with yarn delivery as the long-lead item. Private label is offered by 64 suppliers, OEM by 52 and ODM by 39.
Certifications
Sedex SMETA leads at 16 suppliers, followed by GOTS at 13, ISO 9001 and RCS at 12 each, OCS at 11, amfori BSCI and GRS at 9 each and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at 6. The relatively strong showing of RCS and GRS reflects recycled cotton and recycled polyester blends common in Turkish knitwear, and both require a transaction certificate per shipment. GOTS applies only to organic cotton yarn. RWS, held by Gönül Örme, is the certificate for merino and lambswool claims. Sedex and BSCI audits address labor conditions and are typically requested by retail buyers. Verify certificate numbers on the issuer's database and check that the scope names knitwear.
Cost drivers, vetting and logistics
Unit price typically moves with yarn fiber and count, gauge, knitting time per piece, linking versus cut-and-sew, washing and hand-finishing. With 47 percent of listings unevidenced, ask for a trade registry number, a machine list and a customer reference before paying a deposit, and request pilling and dimensional stability reports on the yarn you intend to use. Turkish origin knitwear typically enters the EU duty free under the customs union with an A.TR certificate, and road freight reaches Central Europe in three to seven days.
Questions to ask before you sample
- Do you own flat-knitting machines, which brands and gauges, and do you link and wash in-house?
- Will my vest be fully fashioned or cut-and-sew, and how are the armhole and neckline finished?
- What is the minimum per style and per color, and what is the yarn dye lot minimum for a custom shade?
- Which stock yarn colors and qualities do you hold that would allow a smaller first order?
- Can you provide RWS, GOTS, RCS or GRS certificate numbers and a transaction certificate for my shipment?
- What are sampling and bulk lead times, and when does yarn need to be confirmed?
- Can you share pilling and dimensional stability test results on this yarn quality?
