Sourcing lingerie from India: what to know
Reviewed guide · updated 23 Sept 2026India offers a broad lingerie sourcing base that combines specialist innerwear production with large knitwear and apparel clusters. SupplySpark lists 66 suppliers on the India lingerie page, and 95% have independent evidence from registry, customs or reviewed sources. Tirupur accounts for 26 listings and Noida for 11. Among the 27 suppliers publishing an MOQ, 22 list 50 units or fewer. Custom-design appears at 38 suppliers and sampling at 34, while the certification mix includes GOTS, Sedex or SMETA, ISO 9001, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, amfori BSCI, SA8000 and GRS.
Match the factory to the lingerie construction
Lingerie is not one production category. Bras, bonded underwear, seamless styles, shapewear, corsetry, slips and basic cut-and-sew briefs can require different machinery, pattern expertise and quality controls. The page includes 39 manufacturers, 25 manufacturer-traders and two traders, so buyers should verify where development and sewing actually occur. Typically, ask for recent examples in the same construction as your product and confirm whether patternmaking, grading, sample sewing, elastic application, cup molding, underwire insertion, bonding or specialized finishing are handled in-house or through nominated subcontractors.
Control fit, stretch and material performance
Lingerie fit depends on fabric recovery, elastic behavior and grading as much as on the base pattern. Define main fabric, lining, lace, mesh, elastics, hook-and-eye components, underwires, cups, thread and trims in the tech pack. Cotton, modal, microfiber, nylon, polyester and elastane blends are typically used across everyday, fashion and performance intimates. Require approved stretch and recovery benchmarks where relevant, and lock color and hand feel before bulk. For bras and fitted shapewear, fit approval across representative sizes is especially important because errors can amplify through the size range.
Use the MOQ data carefully
Of the 27 suppliers that publish an MOQ, 22 are at 50 units or fewer, one is between 51 and 200, one between 201 and 500, and three between 501 and 1,000. Low listed MOQs can support sampling, stock-material programs or simple private-label runs, but highly customized lace, elastic, molded cups, hardware and dyed-to-match trims typically push practical minimums higher. Confirm whether MOQ applies per style, color, cup or size, and ask whether materials have their own supplier minimums that are separate from the garment factory’s stated MOQ.
Screen compliance at both facility and material level
The page records GOTS at 22 suppliers, Sedex or SMETA at 17, ISO 9001 at 16, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at 14, amfori BSCI at 13, SA8000 at 10 and GRS at 10. Those figures indicate broad compliance coverage, but each certificate should be checked for holder name, site and scope. For intimate apparel, buyers typically also define restricted-substance expectations, colorfastness, wash durability, dimensional stability and trim safety. A factory audit does not replace product testing, so agree on the test plan before approving production.
Plan approvals and export logistics around complexity
Sampling is listed by 34 suppliers, which is important because lingerie often requires more than one fit round. Establish development milestones for first proto, fit sample, size set, pre-production sample and bulk approval as appropriate. Lead times are typically affected by imported trims, lace development, dyeing, molding and buyer testing. India can serve international markets by air or sea, but the right option depends on value density, launch date and order size. Compare quotes using the same Incoterm and include freight, duty, brokerage, inspection and testing in landed-cost calculations.
Questions to ask before you sample
- Which lingerie constructions do you make regularly, and which processes are handled in-house?
- How is the MOQ calculated across style, color, cup and size combinations?
- Can you source the specified lace, elastics, cups, wires and closures, and what are their material minimums?
- What fit-sample and size-set process do you use before bulk approval?
- Which current facility and material certifications apply to my order?
- What testing do you perform for stretch recovery, colorfastness, shrinkage and trim durability?
- What production lead time and Incoterm apply after all samples and materials are approved?
