Sourcing sandals from Turkey: what to know
Reviewed guide · updated 16 Sept 2026Sandals are a seasonal category, and Turkey's proximity to Europe lets buyers place orders later and reorder within the season in a way that Asian sourcing does not allow. SupplySpark lists 31 sandal manufacturers in Turkey, 23 in Istanbul, with 39 percent of profiles carrying independent evidence. This guide covers the production base, constructions and materials, the seasonal calendar that governs MOQ and lead time, and how to vet suppliers in a category where most listed firms sell their own brand.
A brand-led production base
The listing skews toward own-brand producers: 27 of 31 offer OBM, 23 private label and only 8 custom design, and 22 are pure manufacturers with 3 brand-manufacturers and 2 manufacturer-retailers. In practice this means most factories run their own collection on their own lasts and will adapt colors, materials and branding for you rather than develop from scratch. Istanbul hosts the leather sandal and slide workshops; Gaziantep and Konya typically handle injection-molded and EVA volume. Several profiles are broader leather houses such as Desa and Derimod, or unrelated apparel firms, so confirm that sandals are a current production line. Ferudun Kundura explicitly lists leather sandals and TRUST/CALLIGNARI lists casual and sport styles.
Constructions, materials and cost drivers
Turkish sandals are typically cemented strap-and-buckle styles, stitched leather slides, cork-bed footbeds with EVA or rubber outsoles, and espadrille-type jute wraps for summer. Uppers are full-grain, nubuck, suede or vegetable-tanned leather from domestic tanneries, with PU and textile for lower price points. In our experience the main cost drivers are the footbed and sole system, the number of straps and hardware pieces, leather grade, and whether the last is stock or custom. Buckles, rivets and metal trims are often imported, so confirm their lead time separately.
The seasonal calendar, MOQ and lead times
Only 1 supplier publishes an MOQ, in the 51 to 200 unit range, so expect to negotiate. In our experience factories ask for 100 to 200 pairs per style across sizes for adapted stock models and more for a custom last. Sampling typically takes two to three weeks and bulk 40 to 60 days after approval. The calendar matters more than the numbers: factories fill their own spring-summer lines from December to March, so place your first order by January for May delivery and reserve capacity for a June reorder, which is the main reason to source sandals from Turkey rather than further away. Deposits of 30 to 50 percent are standard.
Certifications and vetting
Formal certification is thin: ISO 9001 has 3 holders, and ISO 50001, ISO 45001, ISO 14064, ISO 14001 and Sedex (SMETA) have one each, while Desa lists Leather Working Group Gold and Higg Index. Treat this as a segment where you verify the factory rather than rely on paper. Ask for the MERSİS registry number, visit or commission a factory audit, and confirm which lines are made in-house versus by subcontracted lasting units. For summer footwear request strap attachment and buckle pull tests, sole bond strength, and REACH results on chromium VI and on phthalates in PU components.
Logistics and customs
Sandals clear into the EU duty free with an A.TR certificate under the Customs Union, and road freight from Istanbul reaches Western Europe in five to ten days, which supports in-season reorders. US buyers pay chapter 64 duties that vary by upper and sole material. Agree carton counts, shoe-box or polybag packing and EU material pictograms during sampling.
Questions to ask before you sample
- Are sandals a current production line, and which listed styles are made on your own lasts versus bought in?
- What is the MOQ per style and color for an adapted stock model, and what changes for a custom last?
- When does your spring-summer capacity fill, and can you reserve slots for an in-season reorder?
- Which tannery supplies the leather and what REACH test reports are available?
- Can you provide strap attachment, buckle pull and sole bond test results?
- What are your standard payment terms, and do you accept third-party inspection before shipment?
