Sourcing sneakers from Turkey: what to know
Reviewed guide · updated 16 Sept 2026Turkey is not a volume competitor to Vietnam or China for sneakers, but it is a credible near-shore option for European brands that want small runs, fast turnaround and leather uppers. SupplySpark lists 44 sneaker manufacturers in Turkey, 34 of them in Istanbul, with 52 percent carrying independent evidence from registry, customs or reviewed sources. Most listed companies are brands with their own production rather than pure contract factories, which shapes how you should approach them. This guide covers the supplier base, construction and minimums, certifications, cost and logistics.
A brand-led supplier base
Of the 44 suppliers, 25 describe themselves as manufacturers, 4 as manufacturer and trader, 3 as brand-retailers and 3 as brand-manufacturers. OBM is offered by 38 of them and private label by 30, so most sneaker capacity in Turkey sits inside vertically integrated brands that also take third-party work. Derimod in Istanbul, which lists sneakers alongside leather shoes and holds ISO 9001, is a representative example, as is Desa with Leather Working Group Gold. Ferudun Kundura covers classic and outdoor styles rather than athletic sneakers. Several other listed names, including Tergan, KİĞILI and JAKAMEN, describe leather goods or tailoring, so screen for actual sneaker production before requesting samples.
Construction, tooling and minimums
Turkish sneakers are typically cemented cupsole constructions with leather or suede uppers on rubber or EVA outsoles; vulcanized capacity is limited. The critical constraint is the outsole: a custom mold typically costs several thousand euros per size run and only pays back above a few hundred pairs, so early programs run on the factory's existing molds and lasts. Only 2 of the 44 suppliers publish an MOQ, one at 50 pairs or fewer and one in the 51 to 200 range. In our experience minimums with existing molds are 100 to 300 pairs per style and color, rising sharply with custom tooling. Sampling typically takes four to six weeks and bulk eight to twelve weeks.
Certifications and compliance
Certification is sparse: ISO 9001 at 4 suppliers, Sedex SMETA at 3, SA8000 at 2, ISO 45001 at 2, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at 2 and GOTS at 2. As with other leather footwear, the material evidence matters more: ask for the tannery name and Leather Working Group rating, and request REACH test reports on chromium VI and azo dyes in the leather and phthalates in the sole compound. EU footwear labeling requires declared upper, lining and sole materials, and none of the listed factory certificates cover that.
Cost drivers, negotiation and vetting
Upper leather, outsole and tooling amortization set the price, with laces, insoles, packaging and embroidery behind them. Because most listed suppliers sell their own brand, be explicit that you want a per-pair OEM quote without their branding, and confirm exclusivity on any custom last or mold you pay for. Just over half of the suppliers have independent evidence, so verify the registry entry and visit the factory or commission a third-party audit before paying tooling. Inspect for sole bond strength, pairing and color consistency across the run.
Logistics and duty
Sneakers with leather uppers classify under HS 6403 and textile-upper styles under HS 6404. Goods in free circulation enter the EU duty-free with an A.TR certificate; UK and US buyers pay footwear duty that is typically above apparel rates. Road freight from Istanbul to Central Europe typically takes five to ten days.

- Can we develop on your existing lasts and molds, and what does a custom outsole mold cost and take?
- What is your minimum per style and per color with existing tooling versus custom tooling?
- Which tannery supplies the leather, and can you share REACH test reports for uppers and sole compound?
- Will you quote OEM without your branding, and will custom tooling we pay for be exclusive to us?
- What are your sampling and bulk lead times, and what deposit and payment terms apply?
- Which importers or brands in our market have you shipped sneakers to?
