Sourcing beanies from Turkey: what to know
Reviewed guide · updated 16 Sept 2026Beanies are a low-risk way to test a Turkish supplier: the product is small, minimums are modest and Istanbul has both flat-knit knitwear houses and headwear specialists that can run them. SupplySpark lists 41 beanie manufacturers in Turkey, 32 of them in Istanbul, with 54 percent carrying independent evidence from registry, customs or reviewed sources. This guide covers who makes them, knit versus cut-and-sew construction, minimums and lead times, the certifications that matter for yarn claims, cost drivers and logistics.
Who makes beanies in Turkey
Of the 41 suppliers, 27 describe themselves as manufacturers, 8 as manufacturer and trader, 3 as traders and 1 as a brand. Two kinds of company appear. Headwear specialists such as ROOF International in Istanbul, which produces baseball caps, bucket hats, beanies and bags at a 200 unit minimum and holds Sedex and GOTS, handle the full accessory range. Knitwear houses such as ANTİK Dış Ticaret and Atlas İstanbul Tekstil, both in Istanbul, run flat-knit sweaters and cardigans and can knit beanies on the same machines; Atlas lists GOTS, OEKO-TEX, BCI and REPREVE. Jersey and fleece factories such as DENEY Tekstil and Kavala Tekstil can produce cut-and-sew beanies from their existing fabrics.
Construction, minimums and lead times
A knitted beanie is typically produced on 5, 7 or 12 gauge flat-knit machines from acrylic, wool-acrylic blends, merino or organic cotton, with a cuffed or slouch shape, and finished with a woven label, leather patch, embroidery or pom-pom. Cut-and-sew versions use polar fleece or jersey. Of the 41 suppliers, 18 publish an MOQ: 12 in the 51 to 200 range, 3 at 50 units or fewer and 3 between 201 and 500. Published examples are 100 units at DENEY and Kavala, 150 at Vera Nadar and 200 at ROOF International. In our experience yarn minimums, not knitting time, set the real floor, so expect per-color minimums on custom-dyed yarn. Sampling typically takes two weeks and bulk three to six weeks.
Certifications and yarn claims
GOTS is the most common certificate at 12 suppliers, followed by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (10), ISO 9001 (8), OCS (8), Sedex SMETA (7), amfori BSCI (6) and RCS (6). That profile suits buyers making organic or recycled content claims, since GOTS, OCS and RCS certify the chain of custody from yarn to garment. Ask for the transaction certificate for your specific order rather than the factory's scope certificate. For wool blends, request the yarn specification and confirm whether merino is mulesing-free if your market asks for it.
Cost drivers, negotiation and vetting
Yarn is the largest cost line: acrylic is cheapest, wool blends and merino cost several times more, and recycled or organic yarns carry a premium. Jacquard patterns, multiple colorways, leather patches and retail packaging add cost per unit. Private label is offered by 30 of the 41 suppliers and custom design by 29, so a knit tech pack with yarn count, gauge and finished dimensions will get you an accurate quote. Because 3 traders and 8 manufacturer-traders are listed, confirm where the knitting is done. Check the first sample for stitch density, stretch recovery and label placement, and wash-test cotton beanies, which tend to lose shape.
Logistics
Beanies are light and compressible, so air freight is viable for small first orders and road freight from Istanbul typically reaches Central Europe in five to ten days. Knitted headwear classifies under HS 6505, and goods in free circulation enter the EU duty-free with an A.TR certificate.
Questions to ask before you sample
- Do you knit in-house, and on what gauge machines, or is the beanie cut-and-sew from fleece or jersey?
- What yarn composition and count are you quoting, and what is the minimum per color for custom-dyed yarn?
- Can you issue a GOTS, OCS or RCS transaction certificate for our order if we make a content claim?
- What is your minimum per style and per color, and what is the sampling lead time and fee?
- Which finishing options such as woven labels, leather patches, embroidery and pom-poms are done in-house?
- What are your bulk lead times and payment terms?
